“I LOVE teaching!!!
But sometimes it can really be...
A Pain In the Neck”
Have you ever found yourself saying those words?
If so, don’t feel bad - you’re not alone. Many teachers suffer with chronic neck pain. It’s simply “part of the job”.
No, It’s Not!!!
Of course, many teachers DO suffer with neck pain, but it doesn’t have to be “part of the job”. There ARE things that can be done to help relieve - and possibly eliminate - neck pain.
The Causes of Neck Pain
Before discussing methods for relieving neck pain, let’s first look at the causes of neck pain.
Injuries - such as an automobile accident or a fall - can cause neck pain. Teachers, of course, are not immune to injuries, but injuries are NOT the most common cause of their neck pain.
Instead, for teachers, there are TWO other causes that are far more common:
-
1.Repetitive Motions
-
2.Stress
Let’s look at each of these in a little more depth:
Regarding “Repetitive Motions”, schoolteachers - like many other professionals - have to use the same muscles, in the same manner, every day. From writing on a chalkboard (or using a Smart Board), typing on a computer, grading papers...most of what a teacher does is repeated over and over on a daily basis.
Over time, these repetitive motions can create alignment and muscle imbalances in the neck and shoulder areas, leading to neck pain.
Pain-relieving creams as well as certain medicines may provide some relief, but, unless these imbalances are corrected, the pain is likely to remain.
(We’ll talk more about CORRECTING the CAUSE of the neck pain in a moment.)
As for “Stress”, thank goodness that there is absolutely no stress involved with being a schoolteacher.
JUST KIDDING!!!
I really am just kidding.
Being a schoolteacher is very stressful. The responsibilities and pressures that come with being a teacher are astronomical and extend far beyond simply dealing with students in a classroom. Bureaucracy, endless paperwork, and parents are just some of the additional stressors that a teacher has to deal with.
The bottom line is that the emotional stress of teaching DOES take a physical toll on the body.
Stress, especially chronic stress, can place a “pull” on the muscles and vertebra of the neck. This, in turn, may result in an irritation - or “pinching” - of the surrounding nerves.
The pain resulting from the nerve irritation can be localized to one specific area or it may travel - up into the head and neck or down to “spots” between the shoulder blades.
Once again, if true relief is to be attained, CORRECTING the structural and muscular imbalances needs to become the goal.
Unfortunately, most “treatments” seem to focus less on “correcting” the cause of the pain and more on simply covering up the symptoms.
As stated above, drugs and creams that offer “temporary relief” certainly have their place, but they do little to actually correct the problem.
What Is The Solution???
If neck pain can be brought on by structural and muscular imbalances, then the goal of treatment must be to identify and correct these imbalances.
Enter CHIROPRACTIC
For over 100 years, Doctors of Chiropractic have been helping individuals with neck and lower back pain find relief and correction from their problems.
The premise behind Chiropractic is actually quite simple:
Find the vertebra bones that are “out of alignment” and then “realign” or “correct” them via Chiropractic adjustments.
Does It Work???
A pilot study published in the December 2005 scientific journal, Clinical Chiropractic, studied 21 individuals with neck pain. Each participant was tested for neck pain, along with values associated with pain such as quality of life, levels of anxiety and depression.
Each of the 21 individuals received a regime of chiropractic care. The results showed that 19 of the 21 participants experienced improvement.
19 out of 21 individuals experienced improvement?
That, to me, is phenomenal!!!
Can Chiropractic care help you?
Great question. But first, let me introduce myself:
My name is Dr. George Burroughs and I am the owner of Atlas Chiropractic in Saraland, Alabama. In my 20 years of practice, I have been blessed with the opportunity to help many individuals overcome problems such as neck pain, headaches and lower back pain.
Now, to answer the question “Can Chiropractic care help you?”
Honestly, I don’t know. What I do know, however, is that I would like the opportunity to examine the muscles and vertebra of your neck and shoulders to see if there are any imbalances.
If, after consulting with you and examining your spine, I find that you don’t have any misaligned vertebra (or if there are any non-chiropractic related findings), I will NOT recommend chiropractic care for you.
If, however, I DO find that you have misaligned vertebra, I WILL recommend chiropractic care for you.
It’s really that simple.
